Steps to Study Abroad

Is studying abroad on your mind, but you’re not sure where to start?

Here are the steps to help you get started on this exciting journey.

Step One: Research Programs

Learn about the different opportunities and locations to study abroad available at UL Lafayette.

  1. Summer Faculty-Led Programs: You can earn from three to nine credits over the summer, and you will find your classes both interesting and challenging.

The available locations include:

Semester or Year Abroad: You can have a full immersion experience through our partner institutions around the world. Learn more about our Global Partnerships.

Meet with the Global Programs Coordinator for additional information and to obtain a campus checklist of how to prepare for a semester or year abroad.

Step Two: Meet with your Academic Advisor

Research your options and set your goals. We encourage you to schedule a meeting with your academic advisor to discuss your goals and identify courses that align with your academic path. This step will help you make informed decisions and ensure a seamless integration of your study abroad experience into your degree program.

Step Three: Get/Renew your Passport

To participate in a study abroad program, you will need a valid passport. If you don't already have one, we recommend initiating the passport application process as soon as possible. Obtaining a passport can take some time, so it is best to start early and ensure that you have all the necessary documentation.

Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months past the end of your program.

See the US Department of State for information on how to get/renew a US passport

Step Four: Complete/Submit your Study Abroad Application

Once you have thoroughly researched your options and identified your preferred destination, the next step is to complete and submit your Study Abroad Application.

You must complete and submit your Study Abroad Application by the deadline.

  • Initial Deadline: December 15.
  • Final Deadline: January 25.

Step Five: Pay the Deposit via ULINK

To secure your spot in the study abroad program, a deposit is required. You can make the deposit payment via ULINK. Detailed instructions on how to make the payment can be found on the Payment Policies and Deadlines page.

We are here to guide you through this process and answer any questions you may have along the way.
