Travel and field studies in some of the most spectacular, beautiful, and culturally rich Pre-Columbian sites, colonial cities and contemporary projects known to the Americas … public open space, architecture, art, parks, and urban design in the incredibly rich tapestry that is Mexico City … field studies, readings, and on-site lectures as the basis of the in-country studies … travel north to cities such as San Miguel de Allende and Guanajuato … visit the master works of Luis Barragan and then retire to our own private courtyard in the heart of Mexico City and reflect on the future of Urbanism.

The course will provide participants with the opportunity to explore the role on nature, culture, and historic events in shaping the built environment and in providing inspiration for the arts.  Studies will also look at vernacular and indigenous architecture, urban settlements, and design and how these elements have been incorporated in contemporary arts and recently built urban projects in Mexico City. Central Mexico was selected for its convenient location and its prominence as a new model for the Americas.  In addition, it is a rich laboratory for the examination of the influence culture, history, and environment has on contemporary society.

The largest and fastest city on the American continent ... Mexico City presents a unique opportunity to investigate issues facing all American cities including sprawl, infrastructure, transportation, and housing. A number of firms whose work is little known outside their own country are responding to these urban issues with innovative solutions, inextricably linked to the larger project of the city.                                                          PRAXIS Issue 02
